Suction Strainers

FEROPLAST UK suction basket with a flap comes as starting component of the suction inlet pipeline, which, with its size and flow characteristics, provide a sufficient amount of fluid sucked by the pump without cavitation in the pump and the entry of larger particles that could damage the pump. After the termination of the pump, built-reflective flap provides a sufficient amount of fluid intake, so that the pump can start again without any further addition of liquids. Overall dimensions of the filter are such that a sufficient amount of water can pass through the intake pumps, whereas the hole size on the filter prevents larger particles to pass with the flow. The opening of the repulsion flap is about the same as standard pipe hole for a particular DN, a valve (normally open) maximally opens, thus gives the minimum resistance to fluid flow stream that passes to the pump.

Installation of suction strainer is provided by connecting flanged piping and filter reliance in space from which the liquid is sucked. We recommend the installation of suction strainers in a vertical position, but its installation is also possible in a horizontal position and at an angle to the flap bracket in the upper position (position is marked on the body of the basket). Around the filter enough space should be provided for the flow of liquid to be sucked in and to ensure that the walls of the space in which the liquid does not collapse onto the filter.

Advantages of construction: Suction basket with a damper consists of two parts that are bolted together and the joint is sealed by a ring of elastomer. The upper part of the assembly formed by welding the mounting flange to the body of a standard tube and bottom plate for connection to the plate seats. The lower part consists of plate seats and bracket seat and flap plate seat is screwed to the filter. The seal seat is realized by fitted flap on the ring of elastomer, which is set in the profile recess in the seat. The filter is made of sheet metal with a standard perforation, which allows the determination of the total area of holes and the size of the filter to ensure the total area of at least 1.8 times larger than the cross-sectional area of the pipe. For larger filters, basket is reinforced by a cage of flat steel.

It is usual for suction strainers to be applied in water systems and therefore we recommend working conditions according to standard EN805 Water supply – Requirements for systems and components outside buildings with a recommended speed of flow as indicated in Table 1.

Working conditions:

  • Installation:
    connecting flange of suction strainers with flange of suction pipeline,
  • Nominal sizes:
    DN 50 … DN 1200,
  • Nominal pressure:
    connection dimensions PN 10 flanges, return pressure on a closed damper at most 6 bar,
  • Temperature:
    for the EPDM seal, -30°C … +140°C,
  • Operating fluid:
    water or other fluid not aggressive to carbon steel and EPDM
  • Mounting position:
    recommended vertical position, leaning or horizontal position with the carrier flaps in the upper position.

Testing: At the end of production, each suction strainers is tested according to standard EN 12266-1:

  • Sealing of the suction strainers housing with air 6 bar, testing P11,
  • Sealing seat reflective flap with air 6 bar, testing P12-A.

Materials: In the basic version, all parts of the suction strainers are made of carbon steel. The sealing rings are made of EPDM elastomers.

The entire suction strainer, inside and outside, is protected with a plastic coating layer, thick of at least 250 microns.
